Nu-Beginning Farm was started in 2003 by John and Stella Matheny of Greenville, VA. It began as a small homestead growing produce, making jam, pickles, and soaps, and baking cookies, breads, and pound cakes. Nu-Beginning made their first Farmer's Market appearance at the Staunton-Augusta Farmer's market that summer. Within five years, it had expanded to Harrisonburg Farmer's Market and a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, now the longest running CSA in Augusta County.
Soon afterwards, an internship program affiliated with James Madison University was started, affording the interns an opportunity to learn homesteading in a hands-on, practical way. Homesteading classes teaching soap-making, bread-making, canning and preserving, organic gardening, and small engine repair came along in 2008.
By 2012, John and Stella realized that there was a year-round high demand for local goods and produce. They teamed up with a local coffee roaster to open The Store; offering local food and beverages, groceries and health & beauty products to downtown Staunton. Nu-Beginning Farm took sole ownership of The Store in 2014, and has continued to grow and evolve.
The Store has morphed into a combination micro-restaurant/coffee shop/grocery store/deli/meeting place, with a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, house-made desserts, locally roasted coffee, and goods from over 75 local producers.
